SnapCenter 4.0 - No storage connection is set for StorageSystem :

Dear all,

I'm currently facing an issue while adding Shared Disks to one of our Microsoft Failover Clusters in our testing environment.

A few hours earlier, I was able to add LUNs to another Microsoft Failover Cluster that was setup using the exact same procedure. All of a sudden, I now recieve the following error:

Error: No storage connection is set for StorageSystem : svm03-mgmt.example.com

The only change that was made in between both the succesfull and failed tries is the SnapCenter server's Fully Qualified Domain Name.

Troubleshooting Steps I've taken so far:

  • Verified the Storage Virtual Machine is correctly registered in DNS; both forward lookup (A Record) as well as reverse lookup (PTR Record).

> svm03-mgmt.example.com
Server: dc01.example.com

Server: dc01.example.com
Address: 10.0.0.1

Name: svm03-mgmt.example.com
Address: 10.0.0.130

  • Verified the "Storage Systems" Page in SnapCenter contains the Storage Virtual Machine.

  • Verified the credentials on the "Storage Systems" Page in SnapCenter.

  • Reviewed the Job Log in SnapCenter.

Please note I'm currently using SnapCenter Build 4.0.0.809 installed on Windows Server 2012 R2 with all available HotFixes applied.

Has anyone had a simmilar issue? Anyone an idea on how further investigate the root cause for this issue?

Snapcenter 4.0 Not deleting old snapshots

HI

We have a number of virtual centers 6.5. We are running snap ceter 4.0 and we have a retention of 1. We have set it to vault to a different SVM.

how ever it doesn't seem to delete the old snapshots on the production volume. It always seems to leave the old snaps behind

Any suggestions

Thanks

Any SQL/SMSQL gurus can answer this restore query?

SnapManager for SQL Full backups are taken and then SnapVaulted : 3 separate vol/lun are designated.

1. data [mdf]
2. log [ldf]
3. snapinfo

Out of these three, only data volume is available, 2 & 3 is gone.

Problem: When trying to import mdf in sql management studio, its complaining ldf are missing.

Any idea = Why is it asking for LDF files when this was a full backup model. Does that mean, the dirty buffers [or midified data] were still in cache basically in the log file, when the DB was snapshotted ? But, should that have not comitted considering full backup model.

many thanks in advance.

NDMP SMTape Restore on OnTap 9.3

Did the ability to mount a restricted volume change in OnTap 9.3?  I ask this because I am trying to do an NDMP SMTape restore. This OnTap 9.3. I prepare my target by creating a DP volume and set the state to "restricted".  However, I cant mount the volume now because it is in restricted state.  Because I cant mount the volume, the NDMP client can't see it to verify the target volume exists.

For ONTap 9.3, What is the proper procedure to prepare a destination volume for an NDMP SMTape restore?

Thanks

Has anyone been able to script getting the snapgather.exe to run for when you need to troubleshoot some failed SnapManager for SQL backups?

I only seems to be able to do it manually at the minute and it always prompts for the password of the account configured on SnapDrive?

Snapcenter SQL backup types

$

Hi

Can anybody explain for a dummy what are Snapcenter 4.0 SQL backup types (Full and Logs, Full, Logs)?

When does log truncation happen?

Is it enough to make Full Backup to have restoreable SnapVault destination?

Correct me if I'm wrong:

1. Full and Logs

-Creates snapshots for data and log volumes. Rotates Snapshots.

-Copies Logs to Host Log Directory and creates a snapshot for Host Log Directory volume (aka snapinfo)

-Truncates logs (deletes logs in log volume)

-Deletes old Log files in HLD (according to retention)

2. Full

-Creates snapshots for data and log volumes. Rotates Snapshots

-Deletes old Log files in HLD (according ro retention)

-DOES NOT truncates logs

3. Log backup

-Copies Logs to Host Log Directory and creates a snapshot for Host Log Directory volume (aka snapinfo)

-Truncates logs (deletes logs in log volume)

-DOES NOT delete (rotate) snapshots

During restore Snapcenter uses recent Full or Full and Log backup, then looks at HLD to restore Up To Minute... it actually does not use Log volume for log roll?!

Thank you

Nick

SnapDrive 7.1.5 Not Enumerating LUNs

Helloooo Community,

Have a situation where snap drive is not able to list the LUNs attached to our Hyper-V hosts. The LUNs are connected and accessible through Windows, it's just SnapDrive that can't seem to interact with them.

Hosts are all running Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Core. Other servers using same/similar hardware and software are able to enumerate LUNs through SnapDrive as normal.

Only clues I've got are a ton of events like the following, but tracking down a solution has proven difficult:

The following information was included with the event:

\\?\mpio#disk&ven_netapp&prod_lun_c-mode&rev_0.3_#1&7f6ac24&0&54336130675d442f4d5a6138#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b}
/vol/DOCKERHOST_VOL/DOCKERHOST
(2,0,0,9)

A LUN with device path \\?\mpio#disk&ven_netapp&prod_lun_c-mode&rev_0.3_#1&7f6ac24&0&54336130675d442f4d5a6138#{53f56307-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91efb8b} and SCSI address (2, 0, 0, 9) is exposed through an unsupported initiator.

The handle is invalid

Any help is greatly appreciated.

SnapCenter restore issue

Hello,

Anyone can help with the below errors message in Snapcenter version 4,when i try to make a restore?

The Secondary backups aren’t showing up in the restore wizard because when I mark the secondary storage system as ‘Secondary’ it does not seem to save the setting as the tick box is clear when I go back to check.

The guest file restores fail with:

Error: Failure while attaching disk to guest: Unable to mount datastores:....... in Backup: 13.Failed to create volume clone for volume 10......... ‘

and

‘Error: Failed to create the volume clone. Cannot create volume. Reason: aggregate'' name '' is not in aggr-list of Vserver ''name’'

I have configured the restore and backup Run As Credentials as per the instructions but it looks like it’s a security rights issue.

Thank you

SnapGathers cannot connect to SnapCenter

Hi,

I'm trying to collect the logs using the SnapGathers tool in my lab environment.

I installed SnapCenter 4.0 on Windows Server 2016 DCE. I'm using SnapGathers version 1.18.05.18 as this is the only one available on NetApp site.

After executing the command snapgathers.exe 10 from the CLI, SnapGathers collected the information about installed product and is trying to connect to SnapCenter on localhost

===

SnapCenter Server found, asking for credentials

Veryfing credentials for SnapCenter Server:NETAPP\administrator

Trying to connect to https://localhost:8146

Connection failed for the user: NETAPP\administrator

===

This user has the role SnapCenterAdmin and I'm able to log in as this user using a web browser.

Any ideas why this is not working with SnapGathers?

Thanks,

SnapCenter SQL out of place restore issue

$

I am able to successfully perform sql backups on both of my test SQL hosts in snapcenter, as well as "in place" sql database restores, however, I am having issues with restoring to an alternate host.  Error is as follows:

ob.vmfs.nfs.mount.error.perm.denied:NFS mount <arrayIP/datastorename> failed: The mount request was denied by the NFS server. Check that the export exists and that the client is permitted to mount it.

We are running SnapCenter v4.0p3.  The plug ins on both SQL hosts are running the same run-as credential.  The run-as credential has local admin access to each sql server, as well as SA access in SQL.

Wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and what I might investigate to resolve.  Thanks.

SnapManager for SQL - Disabling Monitoring and Reporting

$

Our DB Admin just installed SnapManager for SQL and currently in the process of setting up through the Wizard.  The Wizard is giving us the "option" of whether we should enable Monitoring and Reporting.  When NOT selecting it gives us the following error message ... "Failed to set monitoring and reporting settings. Error Code: 0x80070002. The system cannot find the file specified"  So it is obvious we need to select the feature to enable the Monitoring and Reporting feature.  Now when enabling the feature and selecting only For Backup to be monitored and reported ... we still get the same error message and will not let you move to the next step; which is finish.

It seems that this is an ON only feature.

Is there a way to bypass this and not enable the Monitoring and Reporting feature on SnapManager for SQL?

Or has anyone seen this error code before?

Greatly appreciate your time and your response on this.

David

Best way to backup SQL on Flexpod

$

I have a Netapp Flexpod. The virtualization platform is VMware and it connects to NFS datastores on the Netapp server. I have been using SQL backups to backup the data, but that seems an inefficient use of disk space. We use to use Snap Manager for SQL back when we used iSCSI. My question is what is the best way to backup the SQL data in my current situation.

Thanks!

Rerun Failed Backups

$

Hi Guys,

I have a query around how to properly rerun a failed SQL backup.

If the scheduled SQL job fails and you want to rerun the backup, I understand you can go into the resource group and click "Back up Now" and select the relevent policy. However, is this then classed as an "on demand" backup and therefore may be subject to a different retention policy?

If this is the case, how do you rerun a failed backup and still make sure that it has the correct retention as set as per standard scheduled backup retention?

Do you rerun the job from within SQL Management Studio (we use SQL Agent to schedule rather than Windows task scheduler), via SnapCenter "Back up Now" or is there another method I'm unaware of?

Thanks

Ash

Same cluster for Source & Auxiliary copies in CommVault IntelliSnap?

$

Hi,

Got a quick question. I have a 2-node swtichless cluster configured with 1 SVM, serving LUNs to a DB server. I have snapshots configured for the DB via Commvault IntelliSnap creating my primary copies. I would like to configure Auxiliary copies (snapvault) for this system. Is it possible to just create a second SVM in the same cluster and set it up as the target for the Auxiliary copies? Or must the auxiliary copies reside on a separate cluster?

Description: NDMP Server reported the following error: Maximum number of backup contexts reached

$

Hi,

I am fairly new to the NetApp world and still discovering and learning as I go. Running CommVault backups started seeing this error when sending backups to tape...

"Description: NDMP Server reported the following error: [Maximum number of backup contexts reached. Delete some of the unwanted restartable backup contexts and retry the operation.]."

XXXXXX::> vserver services ndmp restartable-backup show
Vserver Context Identifier Is Cleanup Pending?

It does say I have 101 entries now, but it changes up to 128 maximum. I have not seen this before and wondering what could it be. The only thing we did recently was the CommVault SP11 upgrade which doesnt mention anything about NDMP.

Found this post which is more informative rather than troubleshooting or workaround type... https://community.netapp.com/t5/Data-Backup-and-Recovery-Discussions/NDMp-backups-are-fail-as-maximum-number-of-dumps-restores-allowed-is-reached-for/m-p/125889#M11129

This one https://mysupport.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/bol?Type=Detail&Display=413339 says that "This bug is not scheduled to be fixed"

Has anyone seeing this before? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance
