Snapcenter install as non-sysadmin or to specific Database?

Can Snapcenter be installed to a specific pre-created Database rather than giving it sysadmin permissions and letting it create its own DB?

Thanks,

Matt

Hello, we upgraded ONTAP from OnTap 8.1.4 7-MODE to 8.2.4.p4. Prior to this, our snapmanager (v 6.0.4.1378) backing up exchange databases was working fine. After the upgrade we started seeing this required protocol is not licensed  error. Any advice?

SMSAP Backup to Tape

Hi.  we are using netbackup to backup our SMSAP instances to tape via NDMP.  Because of the unique naming of the SMSAP snapshots, we're unable to target a consistent snapshot to send to tape and have been  sending just the active file system data to tape.  Our DBAs and Netapp tell us that this might allow us to do a DB recovery some of the time but not all the time.

Recently, i heard that a "new-ish" feature in current versions of SMSAP allows SMSAP to "tag" the most recent snapshot with a consistent naming convention which would allow the tape job to target the snapshot each time it runs and and grab the SMSAP data in a consistent state.

I've looked through the SMSAP 3.4.1 admin guide and found no mention of this feature.

Has anyone found this feature and know how to activate it or have any other info on this?

I've heard of people using post backup scripts to rename the snapshots but I've heard that this creates a problem because once the snaphot gets renamed, then SMSAP doesn't know anything about it and doesn't remove it upon expiration.

thanks.

Which platform should we implement SMO on?

If I understand correct, SMO can be implmented on either Linux or Window platform. Orace is running on Linux here in our shop. So, which platform should we implement SMO on? and why?

I think we should use Linux version, only because Oracle is running on Linux, but I cannot tell why in-depth. Wish somebody who has experience here can provide any reasons.

Thanks!

Trouble with Networker 8.2.3.1 and 8.3.2p4 SVM-Scoped cDOT backups/restores

$

Having trouble with listing all volumes and browsing into volumes with Networker 8.2.3.1 GUI and SVM -scoped NDMP on cDOT 8.3.2p4 4-node cluster.  The reason this is an issue is we used to be able to connect to a 7-mode controller with NDMP and browse any volume and selectively pick what we wanted to backup with a Networker SaveSet.  Now we cannot.

1)  After setting up SVM-scoped config using ECMP12366513 and ECMP1610206, we ARE able to connect to the SVM on the cluster using the SVM_admin_lif in Networker.  We are able to see the volumes on the same node that the SVM_root volume is running on, but not any of the volumes that are on any of the other nodes.  For example, the SVM owns 22 data volumes, 10 of them are on node 4, and the root volume is on node 3 where the other 12 volumes are.  We are only able to see the 12 volumes on the same node.  We have LS mirrors for the root volume going to all 4 nodes.  The purpose of the SVM-scoped NDMP config was to be able to see all of the volumes that belong to the SVM.  Is this a bug with the NetApp 8.3.2p4 code?

2)  For the volumes that we can see, we cannot create backup job and browse into any volume and select qtrees or folders.  We can only select the root of the volume.  Networker gives a message saying "This host does not support browsing of its NDMP filesystem".

We opened with EMC case and their first response was requeseting us to enable the BRE extension.  I used "cluster::*>vserver services ndmp extensions modify -is-extension-0x2050-enabled true" but it did not make a difference.   That was due to sending them the output

Now they specifically say "NetApp has made some change recently that affects OnTap 8.2.4, and now apparently 8.3.2.P4 as well, which no longer displays the root volume names on the NAS."  .... but have not said what those changes were.

SME 7.1 Backup

I am in the process of setting up a new exchange 2010 server.  I have the server up and installed SME 7.1.  Bakcup process is running fine as is the ability to restore too.  I'd like to Mirror to my DR site.  I have created the mirror and initialized it so that is complete.  I start SME and attempt to create a backup, but all SnapMirror and SnapVault options are grayed out.  How do I get SME to see the Mirrored Volumes

Thanks in advance!

SnapCenter and SQL AvailabilityGroup

Hi,

during install of SnapCenter 1.1 youve got the option "install local SQL express DB or use an existing SQL server/instance.

We have an SQL Availability Group (AG) so we chose the second option for a existing host.

Now, if we use the AG name with windows credentials install fails with error 1603 in the log.

If we do the same but use a nodename/instance of the same AG install finishes fine and DB is added to the node.

However, this is nog the way we want it because with a AG host failover DB's become stale.

So, is there a workaround to use the AG name during install?

Restore with SnapManager for SQL from SnapVault (CDOT)

ONTAP 8.3.1P1

SnapDrive 7.1.3P3

SnapManager for SQL 7.2.2.2493

I've managed to configure SnapManager for SQL so it's taking backups and also triggering a SnapVault update. The problem is that SnapManager has no index of what is available at the SnapVault destination. I can only restore from "Local Backups". I'm missing the "Archived Backups".

Is this by design?

Installed snapcreator framework 4.3 on AIX running 7.1 TL4 SP2.  Java 7 installed.  Port 8443 not in use.  Did all of the typical install and setup.  When I start scServer it starts up, but after few seconds when it does a status, it says stopped.  Nothing in the system log file, nothing in any SC log file.  Can't find anything wrong.  Has anyone seen anything similar?

Thanks

multiple database with mysql plugin

hi

i m a bit puzzled with the documentation of the mysql plugin

here https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMLP2397466/html/GUID-7A61B00D-76CE-4114-A46D-FF877EB4834E.html

we can read

The MySQL plug-in does not support backup and restore operations for multiple databases.

but in the documentation it s written

MYSQL_DATABASES : List of MySQL databases, the user name, and the password.

Multiple databases with user names and passwords can be specified as a semicolon-separated list.

For example: db1:user1/pwd1;db2:user2/pwd2

then can we backup sevaral database on the same server?

We are looking at the possibility of restoring an NDMP backup of an ExaData (ZFS) to an ONTAP 8.3.2 cluster.  Has anyone done this before?  Is it even possible?

Thanks in advance!

SnapManager Sharepoint - How to restore a single Project?

Hi,

we've Sharepoint / PWA 2013 running on our site and are using SnapManager Sharepoint for backup.

How can I restore a single project out of the "Project Center" list?

On the restore Screen I go to "Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation-WebApplication"\<our site>\WSS_Content -> View granular content.

If i navigate further to PWA\Sites I can see the project websites under "Sites". But the test project I wanted to restore doesn't have a website configured.

Thank you very much for any hints.

LIF problem with ndmp vserver-scope and Avamar

Hi,

We try to backup a MetroCluster CDOT single node 8.3.2 with Avamar in vserver scope.

We want's to use a dedicated network for the ndmp backup. The Accelerated node avamar is in this NetWork.

But when we are in vserver-scope, and we want to backup a vserver volume, we selected it and when the backup start, it fails because he use an another LIF wich can comunicate with avamar !!!

We tried to use a dedicated InterCluster LIF, a dedidicated Cluster-mgmt LIF and a dedicated data-lif : Same problem. Avamar wants to use an InterCluster LIF used by the MetroCluster, or the Cluster mgmt LIF of the admin network, or an SVM LIF admin but neither the dedicated backup LIF.

The connection with avamar is correct, we can browse volumes, but when we start, another LIF is used.

On the NetApp CDOT we can only select the prefered-role on ndmp but how can we select the prefered LIF ?

And on Avamar side we didn't have a prefered ndmp interface...

So how can we do it ?

SnapManager for SQL v7.2 Remote Verification issue...

$

We have a SQL server on our production site with SnapDrive and SnapManager installed and all LUNs attached and snapmirrored to our DR site.

Each day we run a Full backup on the production server, forcing a SnapMirror at the end of the backup and then run a remote verification on a server in the DR site also running SMSQL server to mount the snapshots and verify the backups are good.

This has been working fine for a long while, however the Database volume has recently been increased to 10TB, the datastore being used as control volume to store drive mappings is formatted as a VMFS5 at the production site.

The problem we are encounting is when the remote verification server tries to mount the snapshot, it fails with ".vmdk is larger then the maximum size supported by datastore".

We have determined the problem is that the remote verification server is trying to mount the snapshot using a datastore to store the drive mappings that is VMFS3, therefore because it is over 2TB the mount fails.

We do have other control datastores at the DR site that we can use, which are VMFS5, which I know will resolve the issue as this has already been proved.

My question is what determines, the datastore used to store the LUN drive mappings when mounting the snapshots for verification on the remote verification server, as changing this will resolve our issue? I have checked logs, registry and config / XML files to no avail. If we can select a different control datastore for LUN drive mappings to use for remote verification then we can point it to one of the VMFS5 datastores, however do not know where this setting is configured.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Scott S.

Is SnapCenter 1.1 and VSC 6.2 compatible with Windows Server 2016 and SQL Server 2016?

$

Hi all,

When adding a host and after the plugins install I am asked to configure log directory. I select configure plug-in, then when try and browse the VM I get this error:Unable to find any NetApp FileSystems on the host, ensure that the Storage Virtual Machines are configured with SnapCenter.

VSC is configured and the SQL server is a VM on a Netapp datastore. I have a VM with Windows Server 2012 r2 and SQL Server 2012 that works just fine.

I wondering if I have to wait for SnapCenter 2.0 or another version of VSC to be released for Windows Server 2016 and SQL Server 2016 to work.

Thanks,

Randy

NDMp backups are fail as maximum number of dumps/restores allowed is reached for a filer.

Hi All,

We are using Veritas Netbackup to take NDMP backup on a netapp filer. The backups were working fine since last few days. Recently, backups are started to fail with below error.

NDMP_LOG_ERROR 1 DUMP: Maximum number of allowed dumps/restores (4) in progress

We have a setup where 6 jobs for same filer will be running together. Because of this issue we had to change limit to 4 to avoid failures. However, this is impacting on time to complete backups. Is there anyway we can change limit for a filer?

Thanks,

Deepak

SnapManager for Hyper-V - Distributed Application-consistent backup over SMB 3.0

$

Hi,

Before the upgrade to ONTAP 9 my Hyper-V Cluster was running distributed application-consistent snapshots over SMB 3.

After the upgrade my SnapDrive and SnapManager had to be re-installed/downgraded after a bad SD version. Now the option to run Distributed backups is gone in the configuration wizard and I found an old document saying that it wasn't supported but that was on Windows 2012, ONTAP 8 and SnapManager 2.0.

If it still isn't supported how come I could run it for over a year before the upgrade of ONTAP?

Is there a way to activate Distributed backups by editing registry or config files? The benefit of Hyper-V cluster kind of loses its point if I can't run distributed backups.

Best regards

Joakim
