SnapVault

Hi All,

I am hoping someone can help me out with some clarification. I have recently read something about the Australian Government losing all their data due to their Main Storage unit corrupting and mirroing that corruption to their BC unit. I have seen some Backup Vendors using this as a selling point for their backup product. Indicating that you should get your data off the Storage Vendor Realm to be protected from such an incident.

This has got me thinking about snapvault with the NetApp FAS units. Does this solution protect a BC unit from this sort of corruption?

I am no way experienced enough in this area to really understand the risks involved, but what I had figured is as follows. In a situation such as replication or mirroring, what ever is on the source volume will replicate to the destination volume. So if the unit corrupts, presuming it still manages to replicate, it will replicate that corruption to the destination unit/volume. In Snapvault, at least the way I have seen it, it will replicate the changes to the destination Unit and Volume, however since it will take a snapshot of the volume before hand, which is Read only and cannot be changed, those older snapshots will be safe from that corrupt replication?

What is everyone's experience, do you feel safe with SnapVault or do you still implement a backup with another vendor over and above this?

Kind Regards,

Stu

Snapcenter 2.0 and MSSQL system databases

$

I've just installed Snapcenter 2.0 and doing some testing and found something that puzzles me a bit.

Earlier using Snapmanager we have our system datases on a separate iSCSI LUN. When I do a backup of the system databases it does a streamed backup of them to the snapinfo folder on another iSCSI LUN.

But if I try to do a backup of the system databases in Snapcenter it will simply just to a regular snapshot of the iSCSI LUN where we have the system databases on. Is this really correct? I haven't been able to find any information in the documentation about database layout for the system databases other then they should be on a seperate LUN.

Thanks,

Jimmy

How Do You Create a Cascade SnapMirror Relationship in Cdot

$

I have three 8.3.2 cdot clusters in three locations, lets call them A, B, and C. A replicates content to both B and C. I need to set up two jobs that replicate content from A to B and then from B to C.

I've set up the cluster and SVM peering, but when I try to create the snapmirror reliationship from B to C in System Manager it doesn't list the volumes I need to replicate as choices. it indicates that the volumes must be read-write, which of course they aren't since they are snapmirror destination volumes in an A to B relationship.

I've not set up a cascade relationship before and don't see much documentation on how to actually do it. I assumed I could just set up a second relationship. Any insights on how to accomplish this?

SnapManager Hyper-V & Snapshot Labels & Protection

$

Hey guys

I'm rather new to the "clustered" world - I'm sure I'm missing something supremely obvious here but I am really kind of stuck in terms of setting up Hyper-V snapshots with replication on a new cDOT (9.1 btw) cluster.

Here's what I did in the "7-mode world" - I set up SnapManager Hyper-V to create regular snapshots. I then had a powershell script that initiated a snapvault transfer using the latest SMHV snapshot to the NearStore and created the Snapvault snapshot. All good.

Now ... I'm kind of stuck. The "new" snapmirror / snapvault (or mirrror-and-vault) requires snapshot-labes to be set, because it only pulls these snapshots, yes? Now - now on earth do I get SMHV to attach snapshot labels to the snapshots? Because the only way I have found so far is to apply a snapshot policy to the volume.

Which is of course not what I want - because I want application consistent snapshots, a "storage-side" snapshot policy is no good for me here.

Please, what am I missing?

Thanks guys!

Snapdrive powershell script for scheduled snapshots

Hi

We are slowly migrating infrastructure from 7M to Cdot.

Some of the systems being migrated are windows file-servers with iscsi luns attached.

These servers have rudimentary scheduled sdcli tasks to create, rename and delete snapshots.

When the task runs, it deletes the oldest snap, renames the others one by one (incrementing the age, daily1,daily2 etc) and then creates a new snapshot (recent) + kicks off a mirror

I have been looking for a powershell replacement for this, hopefully to allow a bit more flexibility (timestamps, delete snapshots over X days old etc), but mainly to allow tagging with labels for snapvault use.

In my limited experience with powershell - it looks like this can not be done with the snapdrive cmdlets alone because the creation date is not exposed through the get-sdsnapshot output?

Can the above be done without relying on the Ontap powershell toolkit to provide some of the functionality that ive seen in another thread?

Thanks in advance.

Can't pass the license check in Single Mailbox Recovery

I installed the SMBR on a Windows 2012 R2 VM. But I'm unable to pass the license check unter About -> License Info

Tried the cluster management and node ip's unter "Storage appliancename or IP address" but I alway get the following error:

"Netapp storage appliance not found. Verify the specified storage appliance is accessible and try again"

It works with the older 7-Mode system. But because the 7-Mode system will go offline in a few month I installed now a new SMBR VM.

All the Webserver services are enabled on cluster and the vserver.

SnapProtect SVM Source and destination Question

$

I have a quick question regarding the SnapProtect/OCUM configuration. We are running a 2 node cluster soon to be 6 node cluster running CDOT 8.3, we have a single SMV and don't have any Multi-Tenancy requirements.

The SnapProtect documentation mentioned setting the Virtual Server Association and configuring the Resource Pools. Do most people configure the destination for SnapVaults to a different SVM or to the same SVM that has the primary data.

At this point the offsite backups are done to Tape via SnapProtect. With 7-mode we have a backup filer that all the vaults are SnapVaulted too, but this will be put into the cluster as part of the transition to Clustered Mode.

So rather than having 3 separate 7-mode NetApps we will have a single cluster with 6 nodes. 1 of the Aggrs will be the destination for the Vaults but just not sure if it’s better to have this in its own SVM ie SVM-DR.

Thanks

SM for Exchange - Databases listed as Invalid

Hello,

I will start by saying ive never sued snap manager for exchange before...

i wonder if anyone can advise me please, ive installed SME version 7.2.0.1679 on to all of my Exchagne 2013 servers.

I have ran the SME configurtaion wizard on all of the exhcnage servers and they all completed without a hitch.....

Im using SM for Exchange with a DAG on 2013, so the DAG was added when it asks you to add a serevr to be managed. There are 4x Exchange servers and an even number of database copies across the servers.

Im getting the error of "invalid" next to all of my databases within the backup TAB regardless of which server i am connected to. I have also restrated the snap manager service on all 4 servers but that hasnt made a difference

the databases are also greyed out so you cant "tick" the box....

Im not sure what ive done wrong in all honnestsy, the database and logs are on seperate luns on each servers.

if anyone can give any guidance on this it would be appreciated

thanks

VSC 6.2.1 restore/mount backup failed with NFS datastores

$

Hello,

I have a problem with the restore operations with VSC 6.2.1 in an ESXi 6.0 environment. I have the problem in two datacenters, both have the same storage configuration (FAS8060 HA pair with ONTAP 9.0P1). Before I was using SnapCenter 2.0 to connect to VSC but when a restore failed and I didn't get snapmirror labels with the snapshots, I removed the connection/integration. In the other environment I didn't added the VSC to SnapCenter, there was no history.

At this moment I make backups with VSC and that works fine, the snapshots contain a snapmirror-label which I can use for SnapVault to seconday cluster. If I want to mount a backup I receive the following error in vCenter:

Error mounting 17*.*.*20.:/vmwareds1_mount_d1eba1de944e4f8bb309409ac94db819 as datastore dfe0a495-dddb-4006-aad2-0e269fcd545c to gw-esxi-03.customer.loc. You may have reached the maximum number of NFS volumes configured in the vCenter. Check the vSphere Client for any error messages.

In the event on the ESX host I receive this error at the same time:

NFS mount 17*.*.*20.:/vmwareds1_mount_d1eba1de944e4f8bb309409ac94db819 failed: The mount request was denied by the NFS server. Check that the export exists and that the client is permitted to mount it.

The last message is strange because this ESX host has mounten the original datastore and is in the export policy.

It it possible that it will use a different network? I only have a LIF for NFS VLAN (data) and a LIF for management of the SVM.

The SVM with the datastores is added automatically when I added the cluster via the cluster management LIF.

I have searched on the Web and community but didn't find a right resolution.

My questions:

  1. Does anybody know how to sole this, so I can restore or mount a backup?
  2. When I use SnapCenter, can I still restore backups and VM's the way I can with VSC?
  3. If I use SnapCenter, how can I have the snapmirror-label with the snapshots because this was missing.

I hope someone can help me Smiley Happy

Marco

So what is there in the new world compared to the old NearStore?

Hi,

I am thinking of building a new and third cluster on a third location for backups only. Previously we had NearStore and R200's to accept lots of concurrent transfers.

Is there a way to turn a cDOT cluster into something similar? As in a backup only cluster accepting lots of concurrent transfers say 100+ and storing them om NL-SAS drives.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me please as I am struggling to find the awnser on the internet.

One of my DataStore VSC backups is failing on Registering Backup, the folowing error is displayed;

Registering Backup 19:00:10 0.00:00:25

Transaction (Process ID 57) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been

chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.

Has anyone encountered this before, if so - is it fixable and is it fixable without having to recreate backup job and policy again?

Thank you in advanced for for your help.

Jake

snapmirror and snapvault on the same source volume to point to the same destination volume?

$

Can I set up a snapmirror and snapvault of the same source volume to point to the same destination volume?

I am on CDOT 8.3x and the literature seems to imply that this is possible but there is no discussion of HOW.

I have 80xx series filers and the first volume I want to protect this way is an NFS CIFS volume.

I do not have snapmanager or any snapcenter clients installed as of yet

Thank you.

SMVI used wrong account

Hi,

we are running VSC6.2.1 with VSphere 5.5.

Authentication on cDot 9.1 is changed to AD and it work fine.

In SMVI, the authentication for the filers is set to a AD account.

It works for 95% of the backup jobs.

The remaining 5% are still using the old local user "esxbackup" as it was configured before.

Sun Apr 02 2017 20:22:46 +02:00 [kern_audit:info:1732] cluster50:ontapi ::  cluster50_svm7:esxbackup :: <netapp xmlns="http://www.netapp.com/filer/admin" [...]
Sun Apr 02 2017 20:22:55 +02:00 [kern_audit:info:1732] cluster50:ontapi ::  cluster50_svm7:esxbackup :: snapshot-create :: Success

I recreated the backupjobs to make sure that it not does contain old info.

No change of behaviour.
